Dimethylpentene is a colorless, flammable liquid at room temperature with a pleasant lemon scent. It is insoluble in water but miscible with ethanol. It is widely found in natural plant essential oils. Those primarily containing the (R)-isomer include mandarin oil, lemon oil, sweet orange oil, and camphor white oil. Sources containing the (S)-isomer include peppermint oil. Sources containing the racemic mixture include neroli oil, cypress oil, and camphor white oil. During the production of this compound, it is obtained by fractional distillation of the aforementioned essential oils. It can also be extracted as a terpenoid from general essential oils, or produced as a byproduct during the processing of camphor oil and the synthesis of camphor. The resulting di-p-pentene can be purified by distillation to yield farnesene. Using turpentine as a raw material, α-pinene is first obtained by distillation and fractionation, then isomerized to produce camphene, which is subsequently obtained by distillation. The byproduct of camphene production is di-p-pentene. Additionally, di-p-pentene is also produced as a byproduct when turpentine is hydrated to produce turpentine alcohol.
