Manganese dioxide CAS 1313-13-9 MnO2

Manganese dioxide, also known as "manganese peroxide" or "black manganese oxide", is an oxide of tetravalent manganese with the chemical formula MnO2. Its fHm (298K) is -520.71kJ/mol, melting point is 847 ℃, and density is 5.026g/cm3. It exists naturally in pyroxene ore and is a black orthorhombic crystal or black brown powder with a tetrahedral lattice. It belongs to amphoteric manganese oxide and is insoluble in water and nitric acid. Manganese sulfate is formed by releasing oxygen in hot concentrated sulfuric acid. Chlorinated in hydrochloric acid to form manganese chloride. Molten with caustic alkali and oxidant, releasing carbon dioxide to form permanganate. Manganese dioxide is a strong oxidant that can cause combustion and explosion when rubbed or co heated with organic matter or other oxidizable substances such as sulfur, sulfides, and phosphides. This product exhibits reducibility when reacting with strong oxidants such as hydrogen peroxide. Heating MnO2 to above 480 ℃ in air transforms it into Mn2O3, and above 900 ℃ transforms it into Mn3O4. It is widely used in steelmaking and in the production of glass, ceramics, dry batteries, etc.
