Manganese dioxide CAS 1313-13-9 MnO2

Manganese dioxide is an important inorganic transition metal oxide with stable chemical properties, good oxidation and catalytic activity, as well as certain conductivity. It is widely used in industrial production and scientific research fields. According to the differences in preparation process and purity, manganese dioxide can be divided into natural manganese dioxide (pyroxene) and synthetic manganese dioxide. Among them, synthetic manganese dioxide has higher purity and lower impurity content, which can meet the requirements of high-precision industrial scenarios.

Its core characteristics include: stable chemical properties at room temperature, and the ability to participate in redox reactions at high temperatures; As a catalyst, it can accelerate various chemical reaction processes; Simultaneously possessing adsorption properties, it can be used for the treatment of pollutants in water bodies. In addition, manganese dioxide can be used as a positive electrode active material in the battery field and as an oxidant in the metallurgical field, making it a multifunctional and cost-effective industrial raw material.

Application:

Batteries:

A key component in dry cell batteries, such as zinc-carbon batteries, where it acts as a depolarizer.

Oxidizing agent:

Used as an oxidant in organic chemistry.

Pigments:

Utilized as a black pigment in glazes and other materials.

Other uses:

A component in the production of matches, steel, and certain catalysts.

Metallurgical industry:

used as deoxidizer and desulfurizer in steel smelting, reducing the oxygen and sulfur content in molten steel, improving the purity and mechanical properties of steel; It is also used in the smelting of non-ferrous metals such as copper and nickel to promote the oxidation and removal of impurity elements.

Glass and Ceramic Industry:

As a decolorizer, it removes ferrous ions (Fe ² ⁺) from glass raw materials to avoid the glass appearing green; As a coloring agent in ceramic production, it imparts black, brown and other colors to ceramics, while enhancing their sintering density and wear resistance.

Environmental protection field:

Utilizing its adsorption and oxidation properties to treat industrial wastewater and exhaust gas, such as adsorbing heavy metal ions (Pb ² ⁺, Cd ² ⁺) in water bodies, degrading organic pollutants (phenols, dyes), or removing nitrogen oxides (NO ₓ) from flue gas.

Other fields:

Used as a combustion enhancer for making matchstick heads to improve ignition efficiency; As an abrasive, used for metal surface polishing and stone processing; It can also be used as a feed additive (subject to relevant standards) to supplement manganese elements for livestock and poultry.

Safety profile:

Toxicity and Irritation: Manganese dioxide itself has low toxicity, but long-term inhalation of its dust may cause respiratory irritation Direct contact with dry powder on the skin may cause slight dryness and itching. Eye contact should be immediately rinsed with plenty of water.

Operation protection: During production and use, dust masks (such as N95 grade), acid and alkali resistant gloves, and goggles should be worn to avoid inhaling dust and direct contact with the skin/eyes; The operating area should be well ventilated and regularly cleaned of dust to prevent accumulation.

Environmental safety: Manganese dioxide is not easily degraded in the natural environment, and a large amount of leakage may cause pollution to soil and water bodies. It should be avoided to dispose of it indiscriminately; Waste products should be disposed of in accordance with relevant regulations for industrial solid waste and cannot be mixed with household waste.

Special Reminder: Do not store mixed with strong reducing agents (such as hydrogen and carbon) or flammable materials, as violent reactions may occur at high temperatures; Food/feed grade manganese dioxide should be stored separately to avoid cross contamination with industrial grade products and comply with relevant national safety standards (such as GB 14880).

Storage requirements:

Store in a cool, dry, and well ventilated warehouse, away from fire and heat sources (avoid storage temperatures exceeding 50 ℃), and prevent direct sunlight.

Maintain a relative humidity of less than 60% to avoid product moisture absorption and clumping, which may affect performance; The packaging should be sealed properly to prevent dust leakage and impurities from entering.

It is strictly prohibited to mix with strong reducing agents (such as sulfur and phosphorus), acids (such as concentrated hydrochloric acid), and flammable materials to prevent chemical reactions or safety accidents.

During storage, it is necessary to regularly check the integrity of the packaging and the condition of the product. If any packaging damage, moisture absorption, or discoloration is found, it should be promptly isolated and handled.

Transport & Packaging:

Conventional packaging: 25kg/kraft paper bag (lined with PE film, leak proof and dustproof), 50kg/plastic woven bag (thickened material, with moisture-proof inner film), suitable for small and medium batch transportation.

Bulk packaging: 1000kg/container bag (IBC drum, equipped with lifting straps, lined with food grade or industrial grade inner film), suitable for industrial grade bulk orders, reducing transportation costs.
