What is Sodium Alginate?
Sodium Alginate is a natural polysaccharide derived from the cell walls of brown seaweed (Phaeophyceae). It is a water-soluble polymer that acts as an excellent thickening, gelling, emulsifying, and stabilizing agent. When dissolved in water, it forms a viscous colloidal solution. Its ability to form strong, heat-stable gels upon reaction with calcium ions makes it unique among hydrocolloids. As a natural and biodegradable ingredient, it is widely used in the food, pharmaceutical, textile, and cosmetic industries. Its non-toxic and biocompatible nature also makes it suitable for medical applications.

Application:
Food Industry:
Sodium Alginate used as a thickener, stabilizer, and gelling agent in ice cream, yogurt, jellies, desserts, sauces, and to create molecular gastronomy spheres.
Pharmaceuticals:
Sodium Alginate serves as a disintegrant in tablets, a binder in wet granulation, and a material for controlled-release drug formulations and wound dressings.
Textile Printing:
Sodium Alginate acts as an excellent thickening agent for reactive dye pastes in textile printing, providing sharp outlines and reducing bleeding.
Cosmetics & Personal Care:
Sodium Alginate used as a thickener and stabilizer in lotions, creams, masks, and toothpaste to improve texture and consistency.
Technical Applications:
Sodium Alginate used as a binder in welding rod coatings, a ceramic suspending agent, and in water treatment processes.
Safety profile:
Sodium Alginate is generally recognized as safe (GRAS) by the FDA for use in food. It is non-toxic, non-irritating, and biodegradable. It is considered safe for consumption and topical application. As with any substance, excessive inhalation of dust should be avoided.
Storage requirements:
Store in a cool, dry, and well-ventilated place.
Keep the container tightly closed to prevent moisture absorption and contamination.
Avoid storage near heat sources and strong odors.
Transport & Packaging:
Sodium Alginate is typically supplied in 25 kg multi-layer paper or polyethylene bags with an inner plastic liner.
Larger packaging options such as 500 kg or 1000 kg flexible intermediate bulk containers (FIBCs) are available upon request.
It is classified as a non-hazardous substance for transport.
