Hyaluronic acid is a white, amorphous solid that is odorless and tasteless, and has hygroscopic properties. It is soluble in water but insoluble in organic solvents. The specific rotation of its aqueous solution is -70° to -80°. Most notably, it exhibits high viscosity. The viscosity of its solution may undergo irreversible decreases under the following conditions: a pH value below or above 7; the presence of hyaluronidase; the presence of many reducing substances such as cysteine, pyrogallic acid, ascorbic acid, or heavy metal ions; and exposure to ultraviolet light or electron beams.
