Ethyl cellulose 9004-57-3 EC

Ethyl cellulose is an organic, water-soluble cellulose ether produced by chemically processing natural cellulose; it is practically insoluble in water, glycerol, and propylene glycol. However, it dissolves to varying degrees in certain organic solvents (depending on the ethoxy content). Those with an ethoxy content of less than 46%–48% are readily soluble in tetrahydrofuran, methyl acetate, chloroform, and mixtures of aromatic hydrocarbons and ethanol; those with an ethoxy content higher than the above are readily soluble in ethanol, methanol, toluene, chloroform, and ethyl acetate. Determined according to the OT-42 method. Take 5 g of the sample and dissolve it in 95 g of a toluene-ethanol mixture (80:20, w/w); the solution should be stable, transparent, and slightly yellow.
