Cupric chloride 7447-39-4

Copper(II) chloride has the chemical formula CuCl₂. It is a yellowish-brown powder with a relative density of 3.386 (at 25°C) and a melting point of 620°C. Its solubility in water at 0°C is 70.6 g/L, and it is also readily soluble in ethanol and acetone. It readily absorbs moisture from the air to form the blue-green dihydrate CuCl₂·2H₂O. CuCl₂·2H₂O is a green orthorhombic crystal with deliquescent properties and a relative density of 2.38. It can be prepared by passing chlorine gas and water through a contact tower containing metallic copper, or by reacting copper carbonate (actually basic copper carbonate) with hydrochloric acid.
