Arbutin Arbutin 497-76-7

Used as a stabilizer in color photography development; in cosmetics, it is used for skin brightening, spot removal, and hair care. A glycosylated hydroquinone used in research on melatonin biosynthesis and as an inhibitor for identifying, distinguishing, and characterizing tyrosinase. Arbutin is a glycosylated p-hydroxybenzoic acid extracted from the bearberry plant. Arbutin is a known tyrosinase inhibitor; tyrosinase, in turn, prevents the formation of melanin. Arbutin is commonly used as a skin-lightening agent in cosmetics. It works by inhibiting the activity of melanocyte tyrosinase, thereby suppressing melanin production through the inhibition of melanin synthesis.
