What is Antioxidant 1010? What are its industrial applications?
I. What is Antioxidant 1010?
AAntioxidant 1010, also known as pentaerythritol tetrakis[β-(3,5-di-tert-butyl-4-hydroxyphenyl)propionic acid] ester (trade name, e.g., Irganox 1010), is a multi-component hindered phenolic antioxidant, prepared by esterification of pentaerythritol with four hindered phenolic units. It is one of the most widely used hindered phenolic antioxidants in plastics industry. The chemical formula is often written:
C73H108O12 (pentaerythritol tetrakis[β-(3,5-di-tert-butyl-4-hydroxyphenyl)propionic acid], CAS No.: 6683-19-8, molecular weight: approx. 1177.63)
At room temperature it is a white crystalline powder, melting at about 110-125 °C. It is readily soluble in such organic solvents as chloroform, benzene, acetone, but insoluble in water. Antioxidant 1010 has four active groups of hindered phenol (3,5-di-tert-butyl-4-hydroxyphenyl), which can trap free radicals (ROO·, RO·, HO· etc.) in the polymer oxidation chain reaction and break the oxidation chain reaction, thus inhibiting the thermal oxidative degradation of polymer materials in processing and use.
Antioxidant 1010 contains a pentaerythritol core with four symmetrically disposed hindered phenolic arms. Its high molecular weight and multifunctional structure gives low volatility, resistance to extraction, excellent thermal stability and good compatibility with most polymers. It can extend the life of materials and avoid color change caused by light and heat. It is a typical product of the antioxidant which scavenges free radicals mainly.
Antioxidant 1010 is chemically stable, odorless, non-toxic and does not taint the products. It can act synergistically with some phosphite-based auxiliary antioxidants (antioxidant 168, for example) and greatly improve the long-term thermal stability. Store it in a sealed, moisture-proof, and light-protected environment.
Industrial grade antioxidant 1010 has 98% or higher content and is used in industrial applications such as plastics, rubber, fibers and coatings. Industrial grade products are concentrated on the following indicators:
1. Melting point
Melting point is a standard factory inspection index. It reflects the purity and quality of the product. It must be controlled in the indicated range (about 110-125℃).
2. Volatile matter (loss on heating)
Volatile matter is low boiling point impurities and moisture, which affect the processing stability and performance of the product, and should be kept at a very low level.
3.Ash
Ash content reflects the total amount of inorganic impurities, which affects product purity and product quality, and must be controlled within a reasonable range.
4.Light transmission
The light transmittance (425nm/500nm) is a measure of the product’s color and impurity content and affects the quality of transparent products, so it is necessary to maintain a high light transmittance.
5. Solubility
The product should be well soluble in organic solvents like chloroform, benzene etc. without any obvious matter insoluble so that the formulation is uniformly dispersed.
6. Chromaticity (APHA)
The color intensity affects the initial coloration of products, so low color intensity should be maintained for stable product color.
What are the applications of industrial-grade Antioxidant 1010?
Industrial grade antioxidant 1010 with "high molecular weight, low volatility and good compatibility" is used in plastics, rubber, fibers, coatings and adhesives. Here are all the applications (no omissions):
1. Polyolefin antioxidants (mainly used in plastics industry)
Antioxidant 1010 is the main antioxidant for polypropylene (PP) and polyethylene (PE). It prevents thermal-oxidative degradation of the material during processing at elevated temperatures (e.g. extrusion, injection molding) and imparts long-term thermal stability to the products. It is widely used in PP films, injection molded parts, pipes, PE films and hollow containers.
2. Antioxidants for engineering plastics (Field of engineering plastics)
Antioxidant 1010 is used in the stabilization formula of engineering plastics, such as polyamide (PA), polyoxymethylene (POM), polyester (PET, PBT), polycarbonate (PC), ABS and impact-resistant polystyrene, to improve processing stability and long-term aging resistance and prolong the service life of engineering products.
3. Antioxidants for Elastomers and Rubber (Rubber Elastomers Field)
Antioxidant 1010 is used as an antioxidant in stabilizing formulations of synthetic rubbers such as styrene-butadiene rubber (SBS and SEBS), and thermoplastic elastomers (TPE and TPU). It prevents the elastomers from oxidizing, hardening, discoloring and loss of performance during processing and use. It is widely used for footwear materials, seals, elastic products.
4. Synthetic fiber stabilizers (textile fiber industry)
Antioxidant 1010 is used in spinning stabilization formulations for synthetic fibers such as polypropylene (PP fiber) help fibers maintaining the color and strength during high temperature spinning and long term usage. It is widely used in carpets, non-wovens and industrial fibers.
5. Antioxidants for hot melt adhesives and binders (adhesive sector)
Antioxidant 1010 is used to stabilize the formulation of adhesives such as hot melt adhesives and pressure sensitive adhesives, helping the adhesives to prevent oxidation, yellowing and performance degradation during high temperature construction and long term storage. It is widely used in packaging, binding and furniture bonding.
6. Antioxidants for Coatings and Inks (Coatings and Inks Industry)
It is used in stabilizing formulations of powder coatings, solvent based coatings and inks to help prevent oxidation of coating resins during storage and cure, maintaining color stability. It is widely used for home appliances, building materials, and printing on packaging.
7. Antioxidants for wire and cable materials (wire and cable industry)
Antioxidant 1010 is used in the stable formulation of insulation and sheathing materials for PE, XLPE and other wires and cables to help cables to maintain insulation performance and mechanical strength during long-term operation and high-temperature environment.
8. Antioxidants for food contact materials (food packaging sector)
Antioxidant 1010 has been approved for use in food contact materials by the US FDA and other regulators as a stabilizer for food packaging films, containers and bottle caps, helping packaging materials to maintain their hygiene, safety and performance stability during processing and use.
9. Antioxidants for Toys and Children’s Products (maternal and infant daily necessities industry)
Antioxidant 1010, meeting toy safety standards, is used in plastic stabilization formulations for children’s products such as toys, baby bottles, children’s tableware, and baby walkers. These are important to keep the colors and strength in these products so that they can be used safely for children’s products.
10. Antioxidants for Lubricating Oils and Greases (Lubricant Industry)
Antioxidant 1010 is used in antioxidant formulations of lubricating oils and greases to aid in the inhibition of oil oxidation and deterioration, prolong service life and serve the industrial and equipment lubrication fields.

Antioxidant 1010 is used in the stabilization formulation of plastic parts such as car bumpers, dashboards, interior parts and appliance housings to help the products maintain their color and mechanical properties for a long time in outdoor and high temperature environments.
Important to keep in mind that industrial grade specifications do not mean "risk free": Industrial grade product dust of antioxidant 1010 may cause respiratory irritation, but antioxidant 1010 is non-toxic and odorless. During operation, protective equipment should be worn and ventilation should be provided. Industrial grade products are prohibited to swallow. Waste liquid should be disposed of in accordance with the regulations.
