Vinylbenzyl Chloride is an organic compound with the chemical formula C₉H₉Cl, existing as a mixture of 3- and 4-isomers (meta and para). It appears as a colorless to pale yellow liquid with a pungent, aromatic odor. Insoluble in water, but soluble in organic solvents such as acetone, toluene, dichloromethane, and ethyl acetate. Commonly used as a monomer in polymerization reactions to produce functional polymers and copolymer resins. Also functions as a crosslinking agent, a reactive intermediate in organic synthesis (such as the introduction of benzyl chloride groups onto polymer backbones), and as a raw material for the preparation of ion-exchange resins and polymer-supported catalysts. Highly reactive; should be stored in tightly sealed containers away from moisture, bases, and strong oxidizing agents, preferably under inert atmosphere and refrigeration.
