Ursodeoxycholic acid is a naturally occurring bile acid with the chemical formula C₂₄H₄₀O₄. It appears as a white to off-white crystalline powder, odorless with a bitter taste. Practically insoluble in water, but soluble in ethanol, glacial acetic acid, and alkaline solutions. Commonly used as an emulsifying agent in cosmetic and personal care products, as a solubilizer for lipophilic compounds in various formulations, and as a research reagent in biochemical studies. Also functions as a stabilizer in certain industrial applications and as a raw material for the synthesis of other bile acid derivatives. Stable under normal storage conditions and should be kept in tightly sealed containers away from light and moisture.
