Triethyl orthoacetate is an organic compound with the chemical formula CH₃C(OC₂H₅)₃. It appears as a colorless liquid with a pungent, ester-like odor. Insoluble in water, but miscible with organic solvents such as ethanol, diethyl ether, and toluene. Commonly used as a reagent in organic synthesis for the introduction of orthoester groups, in the preparation of heterocyclic compounds, and as a dehydrating agent. Also functions as an intermediate in the synthesis of pharmaceuticals, agrochemicals, and fragrances. Stable under normal conditions but sensitive to moisture; should be stored in tightly sealed containers away from water and strong acids.
