Tributyl phosphate CAS 126-73-8 TBP

Tributyl phosphate abbreviation TBP, molecular formula C12H27PO4, structural formula (C4H9O)3P=O, colorless and odorless liquid, melting point -80 ℃, boiling point 289 ℃ (decomposition), relative density 0.973 ~ 0.978 (20/4 ℃), refractive index 1.4215 (25 ℃). Stable to light, miscible with many organic solvents, insoluble in water. Produced by n-butanol trichlorophosphate esterification. Tributyl phosphate is a typical neutral complexing extractant. It is widely used in nuclear fuel and metallurgical industries because of its stable nature and resistance to strong acids, strong bases, strong oxidizers and strong radiation. TBP has the largest tonnage of extractant production in the world. It can extract uranium from nitric acid solution and is the most important extraction system in the nuclear fuel industry. Uranium is the first metal extracted and purified by extraction method in the industry, the United States, Britain and other countries of uranium purification plant are using TBP extraction system. Because it is soluble with nitrate fiber, acetate fiber, phenolic resin, polymethyl methacrylate resin, etc., it can be used as their plasticizers, so that these products have cold resistance and light resistance. However, compared with other plasticizers, it has a lower boiling point and higher volatility, so its use is limited. In most cases, it can also be used as a solvent for paints and adhesives.TBP is moderately toxic (LD50 is 3 g/kg body weight) and is generally not allowed to be used in products that come into direct contact with food. It is licensed by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration for use as an adhesive in food packaging materials. It has some flame retardancy and can be used as a flame retardant for some resins.

Structural formula:

126-73-8

1. Performance and use:

Tributyl phosphate (126-73-8);is an odorless colorless to yellow liquid. The solubility of TBP is only 280 mg/L in water at 25°C. It is soluble in diethyl ether, benzene, carbon disulfide. It can be miscible with ethanol. It is stable, but it is incompatible with strong oxidizing agents.

Tributyl phosphate (TBP,126-73-8) is a trialkyl phosphate that is the tributyl ester of phosphoric acid.

TBP is a toxic organophosphorous compound widely used in many industrial applications, including significant usage in nuclear processing.

TBP is a solvent and plasticizer for cellulose esters such as nitrocellulose and cellulose acetate.

The major uses of TBP in industry are as a component of aircraft hydraulic fluid and as a solvent for extraction and purification of rare earth metals from their ores, such as uranium and plutonium.

TBP is used also in mercerizing liquids, where it improves their wetting properties.

TBP is also used as a heat exchange medium.

TBP is used in some consumer products such as herbicides and water thinned paints and tinting bases.
