Tetramethylguanidine is a colorless oily liquid with a boiling point of 160-162 ℃, a density of 0.918, and a refractive index of 1.4692. It is an organic strong base that is soluble in toluene, cyclohexanone, ethanol, and can also be dissolved in water. It is easily hydrolyzed into tetramethylurea in alkaline aqueous solutions and is corrosive. It is generally packaged in galvanized iron drums.
