Tetrabutylurea is an organic compound with the chemical formula (C₄H₉)₂NC(O)N(C₄H₉)₂. It appears as a colorless to pale yellow liquid or low-melting solid, with a mild, characteristic odor. Soluble in organic solvents such as ethanol, acetone, and toluene, but practically insoluble in water. Commonly used as an inert solvent or reaction medium in chemical synthesis, particularly in organometallic and polymerization reactions. Also functions as a plasticizer for polymers, a corrosion inhibitor in lubricants, and an additive in metalworking fluids. Stable under normal conditions and should be stored away from strong oxidizing agents.
