Tetrabutylammonium hydroxide is a quaternary ammonium salt with the chemical formula (C₄H₉)₄NOH. It typically appears as a colorless to pale yellow liquid or crystalline solid, often supplied as an aqueous or methanolic solution, with a characteristic amine-like odor. Highly soluble in water and polar organic solvents such as methanol and ethanol. Commonly used as a phase-transfer catalyst in organic synthesis, a titrant for non-aqueous acid-base titrations, and an eluent or mobile phase modifier in ion chromatography and HPLC. Also functions as a base and templating agent in the preparation of zeolites and other porous materials. Stable under normal conditions but sensitive to carbon dioxide in air; should be stored in tightly sealed containers.
