Tea tree oil is an essential oil steam-distilled from the leaves of Melaleuca alternifolia, a plant native to Australia. It appears as a pale yellow to nearly clear liquid with a fresh, camphoraceous, and woody aroma. Soluble in oils and organic solvents, but insoluble in water. Commonly used in cosmetic and personal care products (such as cleansers, shampoos, soaps, and deodorants) for its cleansing and purifying properties. Also functions as a natural preservative, an antiseptic additive in household cleaning products, and a fragrance component in perfumery and aromatherapy preparations. Stable when stored in a cool, dark place away from light and air.
