Fumed silica (also known as pyrogenic silica) is an extremely lightweight, nano-scale powder of amorphous silicon dioxide (SiO₂). Synthesized in a high-temperature flame, it is widely used as a universal thickening agent, anti-settling additive, and reinforcing filler in cosmetics, paints, sealants, and silicone rubbers.

Hydrophilic: Surface contains silanol groups, making it highly hygroscopic. Most commonly used in silicone rubber and non-polar/weakly polar liquid systems (such as ordinary paints and unsaturated polyesters).
1. High-Temperature Vulcanized Silicone Rubber (HTV): Increases the tensile strength and tear strength of silicone rubber by more than ten times. Widely used in automotive seals, silicone buttons, baby pacifiers, and kitchen silicone products.
2. Non-polar/weakly polar coatings and resins (such as unsaturated polyester resins): Used as an anti-settling agent in traditional industrial paints and coil coatings to prevent pigments from clumping during storage.
3. Insulating gel (colloidal batteries): In lead-acid batteries, mixing hydrophilic products with sulfuric acid solutions locks them into a non-flowing "colloidal state," preventing acid stratification and leakage, and extending battery life under extreme temperatures.
4. Vacuum Insulation Panel (VIP Panel) Core Material: Directly presses hydrophilic powder into the core material, providing ultra-low thermal conductivity after vacuuming. Widely used in high-end refrigerators and cryogenic cold chain logistics.
5. Powder Anti-caking and Flow Aids: Due to their moisture-absorbing properties, they are commonly used in seasoning powders, milk powders, and pharmaceutical powders. They coat the surface of microparticles to prevent moisture absorption and clumping, improving the industrial flowability of the powder.
Hydrophobic: Surface chemically modified with silanization. More suitable for medium to high polarity liquid systems (such as epoxy resins, polyurethane adhesives, and high-end cosmetics), and possesses better water resistance, electrical insulation, and anti-settling effects.
1. Medium/High Polarity Adhesives and Sealants (Epoxy, Polyurethane, Acrylic): Highly polar in wind turbine blade structural adhesives, automotive structural adhesives, and electronic potting compounds. It not only controls viscosity but also significantly improves the adhesive's water resistance and resistance to damp heat.
2. Room Temperature Curtain Rubber (RTV De-alcoholized/De-acidified/Glass Sealant): Commonly used in home decoration curtain wall adhesives, structural adhesives, and high-end glass sealants, exposed to air before curing. 1. Using hydrophobic silica can prevent adhesives from absorbing moisture from the air during storage, thus preventing "coarsening" or premature curing, extending shelf life, and improving weather resistance after curing.
2. High-grade cable materials and fiber optic grease: Utilizing its excellent hydrophobicity and electrical insulation properties, adding it to the filling grease (fiber optic cable grease) inside optical cables perfectly prevents external moisture and humidity from penetrating into the optical fiber, ensuring stable signal transmission.
3. Coatings and printing inks:
Water-based coatings: With increasing environmental protection requirements, water-based paints are becoming more prevalent. Hydrophobic products provide long-term stable anti-settling and anti-sagging effects in water-based systems without negatively impacting the water resistance of the paint film.
Powder coatings: Used as a charge control agent and flow aid during powder coating spraying, preventing powder from clumping at the spray gun nozzle and improving powder application rate.
4. Fine cosmetics and skincare products (sunscreen, waterproof): Used in sweat-resistant and waterproof sunscreens, foundations, lipsticks, and mascaras. Hydrophobic modification makes makeup less prone to smudging or dissolving when the body sweats or splashes water, while also improving the product's spreadability.
