Saponins, also known as ‘soapberry glycosides’ or ‘saponins’, are a class of structurally complex glycosides (glycosides) widely distributed in the plant kingdom (including the Rosaceae, Caryophyllaceae and Dioscoreaceae families). Their aqueous solutions produce a persistent, soap-like lather, hence the name. Based on the basic chemical structure of sapogenins—the products of saponin hydrolysis—saponins are generally classified into two categories: steroidal saponins (found in digitalis plants, which have cardiotonic effects) and triterpenoid saponins (found in sapindus roots and bark, which lack cardiotonic effects).
