what is Propylparaben?

Propylparaben is a colorless crystal or white crystalline powder, odorless and with extremely low toxicity. It has antibacterial effects on molds and yeasts.

How it is used?

Cosmetics:

Found in water-based products like creams, lotions, shampoos, and makeup to increase shelf life.

Propyl paraben can be used as a preservative, antioxidant and antimicrobial agent

Safety profile:

It is a non-toxic and safe ingredient that is good for the skin when used in small quantities. It is also non-sensitizing but can be mildly irritating for sensitive skin. A patch test is, therefore, recommended. It is also safe for the environment and may or may not be considered vegan - depending upon its source.

It prevents the growth of bacteria, mold and yeast in some foods such as tortillas, packaged baked goods and packaged dry sausage and also in personal care products. The FDA officially determined in 1977 that propyl paraben as a food additive is “generally recognized as safe,” or GRAS.
