Industrial Grade:
1. Snow Melting and De-icing (Environmentally Friendly Snow Melting Agent) - Airport Runway De-icing: In extremely cold weather, traditional sodium chloride (table salt) or calcium chloride are highly corrosive and can damage aircraft fuselages and airport runway reinforcement. Potassium acetate is not only extremely low in corrosiveness but also far less toxic to soil and plants than chlorides, therefore it is widely used as a commercial de-icing agent for airport runways and highways (usually formulated as a 50% aqueous solution).
2. Fire Extinguishing Agent - Kitchen Fire Fighting: Potassium acetate is a key component in advanced commercial kitchen fire suppression systems (such as restaurant grease trap fire suppression systems). When sprayed on burning grease, it forms a cooled alkaline foam layer (i.e., saponification reaction). This foam not only isolates oxygen but also rapidly lowers the temperature of the grease, effectively preventing reignition.
3. Textile Industry: Used as a conditioning agent in the fabric dyeing process, aiding in color fixation and pH adjustment.
4. Polyurethane Catalyst: Used as a catalyst in the plastics industry for the production of polyurethane foam.
5. Oil Drilling: In oil extraction, it can be used as a modifier for drilling fluids, helping to stabilize formations.
Food Grade: In the food industry, potassium acetate is a legal food additive (usually labeled E261):
1. Preservative: It effectively inhibits the growth of bacteria and mold, extending the shelf life of food.
2. Acidity Regulator: Commonly used to adjust the pH value of food, making its taste and quality more stable.
3. Low-Sodium Alternative: In some health foods requiring sodium control, it is often used as a substitute to reduce the amount of sodium chloride (table salt).
