1.Performance and use
Magnesium stearate, also known as magnesium octadecanoate, is a fatty acid salt type anionic surfactant, with the appearance of white fine powder, slightly special odour and slippery feeling. It is soluble in hot aliphatic hydrocarbons, hot aromatic hydrocarbons, hot oils and fats, but insoluble in alcohols and water, and decomposes into stearic acid and the corresponding magnesium salt when it meets strong acid. Magnesium stearate has good adhesion property to skin and good lubrication, it is used in cosmetics for powder products to enhance adhesion and lubrication.
Magnesium stearate can be used as a heat stabiliser for polyvinyl chloride, the stabilising effect is similar to that of calcium stearate, it can be used with zinc soap or calcium soap for food packaging materials, but it is not widely used.
Magnesium stearate can also be used as mould releasing agent for plastic products, raw material for cosmetic powder and emollient ointment, powder moulding agent for pharmaceutical tablets, and semi-transparent smoothing agent for paints.
