What is Diethylene Glycol Methyl Ether?

Diethylene glycol methyl ether, also known as 2-(2-methoxyethoxy)ethanol or Methyl Carbitol, is a colorless, viscous liquid used as an industrial solvent, an antifreeze additive, and in the production of lacquers, dyes, and other chemicals. It is derived from diethylene glycol, has a high boiling point, and is miscible with water. Diethylene glycol methyl ether is a low toxicity substance with an acute oral toxicity (LD50) greater than 4500mg/kg (in rats). It is less irritating when in contact with the skin, but long-term or repeated exposure may cause dryness and defatting of the skin (due to the solvent's lipophilic properties). Inhaling high concentrations of steam (>500ppm) may cause central nervous system discomfort symptoms such as dizziness, nausea, and fatigue.
