β-Carotene is a naturally occurring terpenoid pigment belonging to the carotenoid family, with the chemical formula C₄₀H₅₆. It appears as a red-orange to dark purple crystalline powder or solid, with a faint characteristic odor. Insoluble in water, but soluble in organic solvents such as hexane, chloroform, ethyl acetate, and vegetable oils. Commonly used as a natural colorant in food and beverage products (such as margarine, juices, baked goods, and dairy items) to impart yellow to orange hues. Also functions as an antioxidant additive in cosmetic and personal care formulations, as a vitamin A precursor in nutritional supplements, and as a coloring agent in animal feed and pharmaceutical preparations. Sensitive to light, heat, and air; should be stored in tightly sealed containers under an inert atmosphere, away from light and moisture.
