What Is Zinc Oxide?

Zinc oxide (CAS No. 1314-13-2, molecular formula ZnO, molecular weight 81.38 g/mol) is an inorganic compound that occurs naturally as the mineral zincite but is almost always produced synthetically for industrial use.

The largest market segment. ZnO serves a dual role in rubber compounding:

● for sulfur vulcanization (works synergistically with stearic acid to form zinc stearate, the true active species)

● that improves tensile strength, tear resistance, and heat dissipation in tires and industrial rubber goods

1 Rubber & Tire Industry (50–60% of Global ZnO Consumption)

ZnO is the most widely used activator in sulfur-cured rubber. The mechanism:

ZnO reacts with stearic acid during mixing to form zinc stearate, which then complexes with sulfur and accelerators (MBT, CBS, TBBS) to create highly active sulfurating species. This dramatically accelerates crosslink formation and improves crosslink efficiency.

Practical tip: ZnO above 5% in a glaze formulation can cause pinhole defects if the firing schedule is too fast; gases from ZnO dissolution need time to escape.
