First produced industrially in the 19th century, ammonium sulfate has become an essential compound across multiple sectors. Acid-forming fertilizer

How Is Ammonium Sulfate Produced?

Ammonium sulfate is manufactured through three primary routes:

1. Caprolactam Byproduct (Largest Source)

Approximately 90% of global ammonium sulfate is produced as a co-product or byproduct of caprolactam manufacture (the precursor to nylon-6). In this process, cyclohexanone oxime undergoes a Beckmann rearrangement using sulfuric acid, generating roughly 2.0–2.2 tons of ammonium sulfate per ton of caprolactam. Major producers include facilities in China, Europe, and the United States.

2. Coke-Oven Byproduct

In steel production, coal is converted to coke in oxygen-free ovens. The resulting coke-oven gas contains ammonia, which is scrubbed with sulfuric acid to produce coking-grade ammonium sulfate. This grade is primarily used as fertilizer.

3. Direct Synthetic Route

Ammonium sulfate can be synthesized directly by reacting ammonia gas with sulfuric acid:

2 NH₃ + H₂SO₄ → (NH₄)₂SO₄

This route produces higher-purity ammonium sulfate suitable for food-grade and specialty industrial applications, though it represents a smaller share of total global output.
