Sodium trimetaphosphate (STMP) is an inorganic cyclic polyphosphate salt (Na₃P₃O₉) known for its strong chelating, buffering, and starch-modifying properties. It is widely used across the food, construction, and personal care industries to stabilize products, improve texture, and act as a water softener.

Food Grade: Starch Crosslinking Modification and Water Retention
1. Manufacturing of Phosphate Distarch (Cross-linked Starch): STMP is a nationally approved safe crosslinking agent. Starch modified with sodium trimetaphosphate exhibits significantly improved high-temperature resistance, shear resistance (resistance to mechanical stirring), and acid resistance. It is widely used in high-end frozen rice and noodle products (such as frozen dumpling wrappers and hand-pulled pancakes), instant noodles (making noodles more chewy and preventing the soup from becoming mushy), and canned goods and sauces requiring high-temperature sterilization.
2. Water Retention in Meat and Seafood Blends: When used in combination with other linear phosphates (such as sodium pyrophosphate and sodium tripolyphosphate), it acts as a water-retaining agent for ham, sausages, and shrimp, significantly improving the water retention of meat and keeping it juicy and tender.
3. Dairy and Cheese Stabilizer: In the processing of cheese and condensed milk, it prevents protein aggregation and stratification during heating, resulting in a smooth and uniform texture.
Industrial Grade: Construction and New Building Materials Industry (Gypsum Board Reinforcement)
High-Strength Gypsum Core Board Manufacturing: In the production process of gypsum partition boards and paper-faced gypsum boards commonly used in modern construction, trace amounts of sodium tripolyphosphate (usually used as a gypsum reinforcing agent) must be added. This can significantly improve the flexural strength and water resistance of gypsum boards without increasing their weight (and can even reduce their thickness and weight).
Daily Chemical Grade: Detergents
1. Water Softening and Chelating Agent: In high-grade industrial cleaning agents and specialty daily chemical products, it can strongly chelate hardness ions such as calcium, magnesium, and iron in water, preventing secondary deposition of dirt.
2. Low-Phosphorus/Liquid Detergent Stabilizer: Due to its cyclic structure being more stable than linear polyphosphates in specific pH systems and less prone to hydrolysis into orthophosphates, it is often used in highly concentrated liquid detergents as a viscosity modifier and color stabilizer in the formulation.
