1. Flavouring Agent For Food And Beverages: A medium chain fatty acid that occurs naturally in butter fat, coconut and palm kernel oil and mammalian milk, it carries the fatty, waxy, creamy dairy notes that give character to butter, cheese and dairy type flavours.

2. Cleansing And Emulsifying Agent For Cosmetics And Personal Care: Listed in cosmetic ingredient references as a surfactant for cleansing and emulsifying, it also contributes fragrance and perfuming notes, making it useful in soaps and cleansers and other personal care formulations.

3. Raw Material For Flavour And Fragrance Esters: Esterified into methyl, ethyl, allyl, heptyl and nonyl caprylate, it supplies the fruity and waxy notes used in flavour and fragrance compounds, and the same route provides the octanoate esters used across perfumery.

4. Intermediate For Glycerides, Emollients And Emulsifiers: Converted into mono and diglycerides such as monocaprylin and octanoyl decanoyl glycerides and into glycerin caprylate polyoxyethylene ethers, it becomes the oil phase of emollients and the emulsifier component of food and cosmetic systems.

5. Specialty Intermediate For Liquid Crystals And Dyestuffs: Used as a building block in liquid crystal intermediates and in the manufacture of dyestuffs, and it is converted into octanoyl chloride and other octanoate derivatives for use further along fine chemical production.
