What is potassium hexafluorophosphate? How does it work? What are the applications of its electronic grade?

1. What is Potassium hexafluorophosphate? How does it work?

Potassium hexafluorophosphate ( KPF6 ) is an ionic compound of potassium and hexafluorophosphate ions . Its chemical formula is KPF 6 . Its CAS number is 17084-13-6. Electronic grade KPF6 i.e. high purity KPF6 is identified by the stringent control of impurities like moisture, metal ions at very low levels. It is specifically formulated for use in batteries and electronic devices that are highly sensitive to impurities. Hexafluorophosphate is used in potassium-ion battery electrolytes, supercapacitors, dye-sensitized solar cells and electrochemical sensors as electronic-grade KPF6, benefitting from its large electrochemical window, high ionic conductivity and weak coordination properties.
Basic info: Chinese name: Potassium hexafluorophosphate English name: Potassium hexafluorophosphate (KPF6) CAS number: 17084-13-6 Molecular formula: KPF6 Molecular weight: 184.06 Appearance: White crystalline powder Solubility: Slightly soluble in water, soluble in acetonitrile and some other organic solvents; Density: approx. 2.75 g/cm³; Melting point: Approx. 575℃ (simultaneous decomposition); Electronic grade specifications have strict requirements on moisture and metal impurities; Other names: Potassium hexafluorophosphate salt, KPF6, etc.

Structurally ,Potassium hexafluorophosphate (PF6) contains potassium ions (K+) and PF6-. The PF6- is octahedral with a central phosphorus atom attached to six fluorine atoms. The fluorine atoms are symmetrically positioned about the phosphorus atom and the negative charge is uniformly spread throughout the anion. The large size, charge delocalization and weak coordination of PF6- make it a typical weakly coordinating anion. This structure allows it to maintain electrochemical stability over a wide potential range and to migrate rapidly at the electrode interface, forming the structural basis for its function in electronic devices.
Physically, potassium hexafluorophosphate is a white crystalline powder, odorless, slightly soluble in water, soluble in some organic solvents such as acetonitrile, with a density of about 2.75 g/cm^3. It melts and decomposes at a temperature of about 575°C. It is relatively stable to moisture (and much more stable than lithium hexafluorophosphate) but it hydrolyzes slowly in the presence of moisture. The requirements for moisture control for electronic grade specifications are stringent, and must be maintained in a dry and sealed environment.
Chemically,Potassium hexafluorophosphate (PF6−) is a hexafluorophosphate salt. Its anion is chemically stable and has high redox stability, so it is less likely to take part in side reactions in electrolytes and electronic device systems. It can be hydrolyzed by reaction with strong acids and bases to release hydrogen fluoride and form phosphate. Moisture and trace metal impurities are critical to the performance of electronic-grade products. Impurities can catalyze hydrolysis reactions or participate in side reactions. Thus, electronic-grade specifications require strict control of moisture and metal ion levels. In common organic solvents it can dissociate into potassium and hexafluorophosphate ions, yielding ionic conductivity.
Why is potassium hexafluorophosphate used for such purposes in electronic devices such as batteries, supercapacitors, solar cells and sensors?

High purity ion conduction mechanism :Moisture and metal impurities are strictly controlled on electronic grade specifications. Impurities may hydrolyze to form hydrogen fluoride, corrode electrodes, or participate in side reactions. High purity is a prerequisite for the stable ion conduction and long cycle life of devices.
Wide electrochemical window mechanism: PF6 1 has high redox stability and wide electrochemical window, and does not decompose within the charge and discharge potential range of the device, which is the basis for the reliable operation of electrolytes and supercapacitors.
Weak coordination and fast migration mechanism: PF6- has weak coordination and volume charge delocalization, which makes the ion desolvation and migration at the electrode interface to be easy, which is beneficial for high-rate charge and discharge and rapid response.
Interfacial stabilization film formation mechanism : Hexafluorophosphate electrolyte forms a stable interfacial film on the electrode surface, which inhibits side reactions and corrosion, and improves the cycle stability and lifespan of the device.
Large anion wide temperature range mechanism:Large volume anion reduces the crystallization tendency and melting point of salts, expands the liquid temperature range of electrolyte and ionic liquid, satisfies the wide temperature operation requirement of electronic devices.
