What is of FERROUS CARBONATE CAS 563-71-3?

Ferrous carbonate (iron(II) carbonate, FeCO₃) is an odorless, grayish-green to brown inorganic salt that occurs naturally as the mineral siderite. It is highly insoluble in water but soluble in dilute acids. It is widely used as a dietary iron supplement, animal feed additive, and fertilizer.

Application Scenarios:

Feed Grade

Livestock and Aquatic Feed: Iron is an essential trace element for the synthesis of hemoglobin, myoglobin, and various cellular enzymes in animals. Feed-grade ferrous carbonate is commonly used as a trace element supplement and is widely added to compound feeds for pigs, chickens, cattle, and fish and shrimp.

Agricultural Grade:

1. Prevention and Treatment of Plant Yellowing: When soil is iron deficient or alkaline, plants cannot absorb iron and will suffer from chlorosis. Applying ferrous carbonate as fertilizer to the soil can provide plants with a long-term iron source, promote chlorophyll synthesis, and restore the leaves to their vibrant green color.

2. Improvement of Soil Structure: Direct application of siderite powder can also regulate the mineral balance of some iron-deficient acidic soils.

Industrial Grade

1. Petrochemical Catalyst: In some petroleum hydrogenation, coal gas desulfurization, and polymer polymerization reactions, ferrous carbonate can act as a catalyst or catalyst precursor to accelerate the chemical reaction process.

2. Manufacturing Other Iron Salts: It is used to produce other high-purity fine iron chemicals. 3. Ironmaking Raw Material: Natural ferrous carbonate is an important iron ore resource. Although its mining and smelting are more difficult than hematite, it is an important raw material for roasting ironmaking when iron ore resources are scarce or in specific processes.

4. High-Density Balancing Material: Due to its high density, siderite sand is often used as a counterweight in machinery, as aggregate in wear-resistant building floors, or in radiation-shielding concrete.

5. Arsenic Removal and Heavy Metal Adsorption: In recent years, modified ferrous carbonate has been developed for wastewater treatment in the environmental protection field. It has good adsorption and co-precipitation effects on toxic arsenic ions and heavy metal ions in water.
