What is N,N-dimethylacetamide? What are its industrial applications?
1. What is N,N-Dimethylacetamide?
N,N-Dimethylacetamide (also known as dimethylacetamide, dimethylacetamide, or DMAc, DMAC, DMA) is an amide compound formed by replacing the two hydrogen atoms on the nitrogen atom of acetamide with methyl groups. It is one of the most important polar aprotic solvents in industry, and its chemical formula is usually written as:
C4H9NO (CH3CON(CH3)2, CAS No.: 127-19-5, EINECS No.: 204-826-4, molecular weight approx. 87.12)
It is a colorless and transparent liquid at room temperature with a weak ammonia odor. It is completely miscible with water, alcohols, ethers, ketones, and most organic solvents. It has a high boiling point, a low evaporation rate, and excellent solubility, especially for polymers such as polyurethane resins and polyimide resins. DMAc's chemical properties are very similar to those of N,N-dimethylformamide (DMF), making it a representative amide solvent. It does not decompose when heated to boiling at normal pressure in the absence of acid or alkali, and can be recovered by atmospheric distillation.
From the perspective of dissolution mechanism, the amide carbonyl group (C=O) and nitrogen atom in the DMAc molecule give it both strong polarity and excellent coordination ability, enabling it to dissolve a variety of polar polymers and resins, thus earning it the title of an important member of the "universal solvent" family. With its high boiling point, low volatility, good thermal stability, and strong dissolving power, DMAc has become a core solvent in fields such as high-performance fiber spinning and polymer film preparation.
Chemically, DMAc is stable and not easily hydrolyzed, but it is soluble in water. It is flammable and its vapor can form explosive mixtures with air and therefore it must be kept away from sources of ignition and strictly controlled. Store in a sealed, moisture-proof container away from sources of ignition and oxidizers.
DMAc of industrial grade means the content is 99% or above and is used for industrial applications such as fiber spinning, polymer films, electronic materials etc. Industrial grade products emphasize the following indicators more:
1. moisture
Moisture can affect the stability of spinning solutions, polymerization systems and electrolytes and therefore needs to be strictly controlled, especially in polymer processing and electronic applications.
2. Acidity (as acetic acid)
Acidity – the content of free acid. Excess acidity can influence the polymerization reaction and resin performance and has to be controlled within a reasonable range.
3.Alkalinity (as dimethylamine:
The content of free amines is reflected in alkalinity and affects the stability of the reaction system and downstream products, so it must be strictly controlled.
4. Chromaticity (APHA)
The color influences the appearance of downstream products, especially films and fibers, so it should be kept colorless and transparent.
5. Evaporation residue
Evaporation residue is a measure of the total impurities and is critical for the fiber spinning and electronic chemicals applications. It should be controlled in very low ranges.
6. density
Density is an indicator of routine factory inspection, indicating the purity of the product and batch consistency.
What are the uses of industrial-grade N,N-Dimethylacetamide?
Industrial-grade DMAc, with its unique combination of high boiling point, low volatility, strong solubility, and thermal stability, is widely used in the fiber, thin film, and electronics industries.
1.Synthetic fiber spinning solvent (core application)
DMAc is a classical solvent for the solution spinning of synthetic fibers. It is used in spinning high-performance fibers, such as meta-aramid, para-aramid, polyacrylonitrile (acrylic fiber) and spandex, to help dissolve polymers, ensure the stability of the spinning solution and maintain uniform fiber properties.
2. Resin solvent for polyimide film
DMAc is a good solvent for resins such as polyimide and polyurethane, and is a key solvent in the preparation of polyimide films (PI films), engineering plastics and polymer films, used in high-end applications such as electronic insulation and flexible circuits.
3. Solvents Coatings of polyurethane resins
DMAc is used as a solvent in polyurethane coatings, resins and adhesives to help modify viscosity, improve leveling and adhesion properties. DMAc is also used in the production of artificial and synthetic leather.
4.Extraction solvent distillation
DMAc is used as solvent in extractive distillation. DMAc can be used for the separation of aromatics such as styrene from C8 fractions. It is a useful extractant in petrochemical separation processes.
5. Solvent for polyamide-imide insulating varnish
DMAc is used as a solvent in wire and cable insulation varnishes (polyamide-imide varnishes) to help form high temperature resistant insulating coatings for the motor and electronic wire industries.
6. Solvent for preparation of lithium battery cathode material
DMAc is employed as a solvent in the manufacturing process of cathode sheets for lithium-ion batteries to promote slurry dispersion and film formation. It is used as a co-solvent in the lithium battery production chain.
7. Solvents for photosensitive and imaging chemistry
DMAc is used as a solvent and color developer in photosensitive chemicals and photographic products for the traditional imaging and specialty photosensitive materials markets.
8.Other uses
With the development of high-performance materials and green solvents, the application scope of industrial grade DMAc is further expanded, such as in the adhesive industry, polymer reaction media and paint remover formulations.
Abstract
N,N-Dimethylacetamide (C4H9NO, CAS No.127-19-5, EINECS No.204-826-4) is a colorless clear liquid, which is totally miscible with water and with most organic solvents. It has high boiling point, low volatility, strong solubility and thermal stability, therefore it is an important polar aprotic solvent in the industrial field. In daily life we see it in high-performance fiber products, electronic products and flexible circuits, coatings and electrical appliances and imaging products. DMAc is a commonly utilized solvent in the industry of synthetic fiber spinning, polyimide films, coatings and polyurethane resins, extractive distillation, insulating varnishes, lithium battery cathode preparation and photosensitive chemicals. It is a high-performance solvent that connects "amide solvent chemistry" with "fibers, films and electronics." But due to its reproductive toxicity, strict protection and compliance control of the entire supply chain is required.
