Stearyl Alcohol, also known as octadecyl(alkyl)alcohol, belongs to the class of long-chain high-carbon fatty alcohols. White flakes or particles. Melting point 59.4-59.8 ℃ (freezing point 57.95 ℃), boiling point 210 ℃ (2kPa) 170-171 ℃ (0.266kPa), relative density 0.8124 (59/4 ℃), refractive index 1.4346 (45 ℃). Soluble in alcohol, benzene, chloroform, insoluble in water. Slightly toxic, slightly irritating to eyes and skin, combustible, its dust can form explosive mixtures with air, mainly used as raw materials for organic synthesis. It can be produced by hydrogenation of stearic acid or by reduction of ethyl stearate with sodium and ethanol.
